“We've added the media. Why hasn't the treatment performance reached the target yet?”
The answer lies in biology.
MBBR media provides a surface for microorganisms to attach and develop biofilm. However, this process takes time. Adding carriers to a reactor does not mean a mature biological system is immediately established.
Here are three important factors during start-up:
🔹 1. Biofilm Development
Microorganisms need time to attach to the carriers, grow, and establish a functional biofilm. The required time varies depending on wastewater characteristics, temperature, loading, and operating conditions.
🔹 2. Stable Operating Conditions
Appropriate dissolved oxygen, pH, nutrients, and mixing help microorganisms develop under suitable conditions.
🔹 3. Gradual Process Adjustment
Organic loading and operating parameters should be managed according to the treatment objectives and the system's actual response. For nitrification, sufficient time may be needed for nitrifying bacteria to establish.
Patience is important—but monitoring is essential.
Track key indicators such as COD, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, pH, and biofilm development to understand how the system is progressing.
Good-quality MBBR media provides a foundation for biofilm growth, but successful start-up depends on the interaction between the carrier, microorganisms, and operating conditions.
At Small Boss, we believe effective MBBR treatment starts with choosing suitable media and understanding the biological process behind it.
