Many industrial wastewater projects install MBBR systems expecting stable biological treatment — but some eventually suffer from poor COD removal, excessive sludge, or unstable nitrification.

The problem is often not the MBBR process itself.
The real issue is that industrial wastewater behaves very differently from municipal sewage.

Industrial wastewater usually contains:

• Toxic compounds
• High salinity
• Oil & grease
• Shock loading
• Low biodegradability
• pH fluctuations

Under these conditions, the biofilm becomes extremely sensitive.

One of the biggest mistakes in MBBR design is selecting media only based on “specific surface area.”

A higher surface area does NOT always mean better performance.

✔ Anti-clogging structure

MBBR is not simply “adding plastic media into the tank.”
It is actually a biofilm ecosystem engineering process.

The success of industrial MBBR depends heavily on understanding the wastewater characteristics first — then matching the right media structure and operating conditions.
